How to Write a Resignation Letter for a Teacher

So, you’re quitting your teaching job.

Now what?

If you want to present a positive and professional image, you should write a professional resignation letter to the head of your institution. This resignation letter for a teacher is an important document as it conveys your message and shows your professionalism.

It will also bring up the fact that there are other people who are looking forward to working with you.

Teachers are held in high regard in the society and so building the trust is very important. An optimistic letter will help in showing your positive approach to life.

Teachers are hard workers and it is really sad to see them go, but if your student sees you as someone who has grown with experience, they will be motivated to learn from you.

Before You Write Your Teacher Resignation Letter

As an educator, I have learned that stakes are more valuable than a mere paycheck. So, it is my responsibility to recommend and assist you in a smooth transition of your employment journey.

But before proceeding, I will review some of the areas of potential concern that you should address before you consider writing a resignation letter.

It is important to have a clear perspective on how your students are affected by your decision. As a teacher you should demonstrate this balance between your professional interest and the duty towards your students.

If you have a pending work, complete it.

Resigning in the middle of an academic session is not good for both you and your institution. It will be better if  you can delay your resignation till the end of an academic session.

However, in some situations it becomes impossible to delay the process and you may have to resign mid-session.

In such a situation, you can also include any recommendations that you may have as your institution will be in need of a teacher after your departure.

Points to Remember While Writing Your Resignation Letter

To start off your letter, you can use a nice tone. Make sure that your letter is not condescending or mocking. Use a warm and inviting tone that conveys your optimism.

In the first section of the letter, you should mention the reason that prompted you to make this choice.

Whether it was a need of pay raise, a change in curriculum, relocation, pregnancy or something else. Please mention it in your letter. However, in most cases, your principal will be aware of your reasons.

Simply writing “I have made the decision to resign” will not help you. You have to include a little bit of detail about the reasons for resigning and why you felt it was a time to give the letter to your employer.

While you may not have to express your full thoughts, you can explain your reasons for resigning briefly and then close by giving the reader some encouraging words.

It’s a good idea to include your contact information in the letter as well as any other references.

You can also include the details of how you wish to be paid your pending remuneration, such as your teaching duties or some other work-related thing. This will help make your dismissal process a lot easier on your employer.

After you make a summary statement of your resignation, you will need to make copies for yourself and your employer. Keep a photocopy of your resignation letter and a signed copy of your resignation approval.
